"NBC Offends Christians Again"

I stumbled across a news story with the same title as this post: "NBC offends Christians again," referring to NBC's "The Book of Daniel" and now an upcoming Will & Grace episode in which I guess Britney Spears will mildly mocking the crucifixion or something like that. For those people who read me regularly (I wanted to say, "Hi mom" here but not even my mom reads me regularly. I think she's read my blog like a grand total of 3 times since its inception), you've probably noticed that I haven't posted in a while. School hit harder than expected with my last semester of nursing school jam-packed with clinicals. So because I've averaged just over 4.5 hours of sleep per night for about 2 weeks, I'm not going to spend any more time right now writing my thoughts on this story I just referred you to. Rather I'll refer you to a post that I had about boycotting retail stores for not saying Christmas. Also, I think that a parable post on Pyromaniacs last week on the Chad Allen-Steve Saint controversy is applicable as well.

Basically we act surprised when the world doesn't like and doesn't understand Christianity. And our message to them is, "You better respect us or else we'll mobilize our massive right-wing voter and dollar base against you and you don't want that." You know what? We're darn effective at that. Book of Daniel was cancelled and stores started saying "Merry Christmas" again. Why aren't we very effective at making known the love of Christ to the nations? Maybe we need to refocus our efforts. Maybe we need to reconsider what battles are worth waging and when we should rather be wronged. Or maybe American Christianity dove headlong down the slippery and deadly slope of cultural Christianity where the Gospel is absent and moralism reigns. Those who read this blog, let's not make that same mistake. We must make the cross and the gospel our message in word and in deed and run as far away as we can from cultural Christianity (Pharisaical legalism and religiosity) and be with the sinners, loving the sinners just how Jesus did.

UPDATE 2/3: We won!

This is a great post

Very true, all too often I interact with christians who are more concerned about getting people to agree with them politically that they forget the gospel. I’ve seen where some act as if when you get someone to agree with a specific political issue that they’re halfway to christianity but the fact is that they’re still just as dead as ever. I would imagine a cultural christianity was sprung from seeker sensitive movements and a big view of man and small view of God. We can’t forget about politics altogether as Christians at the same time, I believe it’s a gift from God to be a part of the political process here in the US.

I read your boycott costco post and I think you’re right on, why should we be surprised when a fallen world acts fallen, we can moralize the world all we want but it won’t get them out of hell. Also, unbelievers shouldn’t have to think that to become a christian they must become a republican as well. I have seen this too many times when I’ve shared the gospel and they respond with, “well that sounds great but I don’t think I could ever be a republican.” I have honestly heard that before.
